Mary Joy Ethiopia
The charity idea was initiated in 1992 by Sr. Zebider Zewdie and other fellows to address the vulnerability of women in the Asko Area of Addis Ababa. We provided support for women during delivery in a private clinic founded by Sr. Zebider Zewdie out of philanthropic motivation. Over time, the community’s demand increased beyond what individual efforts could handle, leading to the establishment of Mary Joy Ethiopia, and the expansion of its programs and geographic reach.

Our Founder:
Sister Zebider Zewdie
Sister Zebider Zewdie, the visionary Founder and Executive Director of Mary Joy Ethiopia, has dedicated her life to transforming vulnerable communities through compassion, resilience, and service.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1963 in Chincha Woreda, Gammo Goffa (SNNPR), Sister Zebider began her journey as a healthcare professional. She pursued nursing at the Addis Ababa Nursing School and later served in major hospitals including Tikur Anbessa, Yekatit 12, and St. Paul’s.
Impact and Programs
Under her leadership, Mary Joy Ethiopia delivers holistic support through:
Healthcare: Free maternal care, HIV/AIDS services, and lung cancer screening.
Education: Scholarships, vocational training, and school materials for disadvantaged youth.
Social Welfare: Food, shelter, and care for orphans, the elderly, and vulnerable women.
Community Empowerment: Microfinance, skills training, and women’s leadership initiatives.
Her Legacy
Sister Zebider continues to inspire countless individuals through her unwavering commitment to social justice. Her leadership model combines service, sustainability, and spirituality — offering a beacon of hope for generations to come.
The Birth of Mary Joy Ethiopia
After working with Save the Children Norway, Sister Zebider was moved by the hardships she witnessed. In 1994, she founded Mary Joy Ethiopia, starting with only 100 children. Today, the organization has served over 1.5 million people across Ethiopia.
Faith and Personal Strength
A devout Orthodox Christian, Sister Zebider attributes her strength to faith. Surviving a life-threatening illness early in her career, she believes her recovery was through the mercy of the Holy Virgin, St. Mary — the inspiration behind the name Mary Joy.

Sister Zebider’s work has been celebrated both nationally and internationally:
